The only downside is you will get used to the absolute best and other lines will smell cheap/mass market/poorly crafted by comparison…
L’artisan is also a great idea, they have a huge variety and are more “fun” and creative if that’s what you are looking to get out of niche.
CDG, while technically a designer, would also be good if again you’re looking for a totally new experiences from what you are used to. They are very well done and reasonably priced.
To me, Amouage is very tricky, there’s a lot to go through and you have to have a very specific type of taste to enjoy them. I’m not sure it’s a great place to start. I would also say the same for Montale/Mancera, they have a gajillion fragrances most of which are not good and overall they are quite powerful and harsh. I guess these are recommended as beginner houses because a lot of people do begin with them, the prices aren’t bad (well Amouage is but they are easily found discounted) and they will smell very different from what you are used to. But, I think these two houses in particular are where people make a lot of beginner mistakes and you’ll end up with bottles you regret later as your taste evolves. Or worse you’ll end up being “cologne guy” fumigating your friends and loved ones with your new found hobby.
I don’t mean to knock those brands, but to me they are very “handle with care” type of fragrances that can go very wrong if you don’t know what you’re doing/what you’re looking for.
If you want designer smell but niche prices, then check out MKF.
