Female shop assistants in Department stores told me that their purpose was for layering with the EDT, to enhance the effect. At the time though, most of the deodorant sticks weren’t translucent and had stronger scent output. Then the translucent ones came to dominate them, and most were weaker than the earlier generation. I personally couldn’t see much evidence of layering doing the claimed enhancing with either type of stick. But if one wasn’t into using strong EDT, the deodorant sticks could often do a good job if one only used them in combination with aftershave splash (ie. a lighter overall scenting of one’s body).
Basically, nearly all of them were too weak for my liking, except the old D&G Homme ones from 15 years ago, which were about half as strong as the then EDT…………which means they are about as strong as the current EDT.
But as I’ve pointed out elsewhere, I use them regularly now, since nearly all antiperspirants started giving me really itchy underarms. I then discovered that if I used the deodorant sticks first, then I could again apply anti-perspirants without a problem.
That said, as certain parts of the internet point out, the main purpose of deodorant sticks is to stop sweat bacteria breaking down for four hours so that one doesn’t get smelly, and they not inhibit pheromone production. Whereas antiperspirants do stop one sweating, but also do inhibit pheromone production.
