hello to all the masters I am new in this industry please help me out I have sigma Aldrich ethanol with a light smell so which fixative should i use to cut of the smell someone told me to add mix 2% of Galoxilide and 2% Sandeol with 4% DM water. please help me out what is the best possible formula for one ethanol TIA
What exactly is the ethanol you have? What % ethanol, what grade – food grade, ACS grade etc. Denatured (with what?) or undenatured.
Is there a spec sheet listing any possible contaminants that you should avoid (e.g. benzene)?
Are you using the ethanol to make perfume?
If it’s food grade 96%+ ethanol, then yes it is suitable
Other grades undenatured ethanol, possibly suitable (depending on whether there are traces of things in it like benzene). 96%+ ethanol ideally (too much water = bad for perfumery).
If denatured, you definitely cannot use anything denatured with methanol (toxic). Denatonium benzoate is fine (makes it taste bitter but doesn’t affect smell). MIBK I find makes it smell funny so would avoid.
Ethanol is going to smell like ethanol. It is not odorless lol.
What are you trying to achieve?
Are you trying to make the ethanol you use in the lab (for cleaning?) smell better lol. I’m sure there are far worse smells.
