A new chapter is on the menu at Maison Tahite, the latest Café Gourmand is part of the new collection dedicated to all things coffee. This is no regular café, though. I imagine sipping on a steaming cup of freshly brewed dark roast in an old bookshop, walls lined with worn-in leather couches, and shelves bursting with books holding stories of adventures, love, and faraway travels. The intoxicating scent of coffee is slowly seeping into every part of the interior, mixing with the strong smoky aroma of the fireplace. Oh, this is one woody gourmand.
I recall speaking with the founder, Roberto Drago, and he discussed his plans to take the most well-known and loved ingredients and explore each fully and in-depth. He has succeeded with the most delicious collection of Vanilla perfumes, quickly followed by the equally mouthwatering Cacao one. The newly launched Coffee collection explores various facets of this addictive bean. To this very day, there are many legends surrounding the origin of coffee.

However, we can trace coffee cultivation and trade to the Arabian Peninsula. By the 15th century, coffee was grown in the Yemeni district of Arabia, and by the 16th century, it was known in Persia, Egypt, Syria, and Turkey. By the 17th century, European travelers to the Near East brought back stories of an unusual dark black beverage that invigorated the senses and became a replacement for the usual beer or wine beverages enjoyed with the morning meal. Its popularity exploded, and it was soon becoming popular across the continent. By the end of the century, there were over 300 coffee houses in London, and it is the perfect setting that comes to mind when I think of Maison Tahite Cafe Gourmand. Whether you’re a coffee connoisseur or don’t particularly care about how you get your caffeine fix, there’s no denying that the smell of freshly-brewed coffee in the morning is stimulating. The chemistry behind its aroma, however, is far from simple. It is a rather complex collection of chemical compounds, many completely odorless. The smell of coffee has always piqued my interest. Incredibly complex, it can be fruity and floral, caramelized and nutty, bitter and acidic, spicy and earthy. All the magic is hidden in the brewing process of the coffee and isn’t about chemical change – instead, it’s about extracting compounds from the roasted coffee beans.

Maison Tahite Café Gourmand features the CO2 extract of Arabic Coffee. The opening is sprinkled with golden saffron greeting you from the first spray and is both spicy and lactonic with a robust nutty heart that gives me a touch of Nutella vibes. There is a strong dry herbal note of sage peeking through, while the smokiness of the vetiver adds a piquant layer of depth to the composition.
In my search for the perfect coffee scent, I have fallen hard for only a few, a soft and rose-centered Montale Intense Cafe, a strong and dark espresso shot of Akro Awake, and the frothy cream of lavender-infused Maison Margiela Coffee Break are among some of my favorites. Maison Tahite Cafe Gourmand is now among my absolute go-to coffee fragrances, and I have been reaching for it often in the mornings as I’m starting my often-hectic work days.

As I wear Maison Tahite Cafe Gourmand more, I discover that it feels somewhat familiar for me, and it suddenly dawns on me. It’s like a modern spin on the traditional Italian biscotti, tapping into that familiar and comforting feeling of wrapping your hands around a warm cup of coffee with a splash of hazelnut milk and dipping a biscotti in it. It transported me back to the time I was living and studying in Italy, and I recall that in every tavern, café, or a restaurant, a good meal would always end with a cup of coffee and a side of biscotti. It’s equally rejuvenating at the start of the day as it is soothing and comforting when the night falls, and I’m craving something warm, rich and beautifully familiar.
