A few months ago i started perfumery and i instantly became hooked. Ever since i´ve expanded my collection of aroma chemicals and experimented a lot- Of course, most of it´s been a learning experience not resulting in anything wearable- Even though, at the very least, i´ve produced a vanilla scent which i really like.
But in order to grow and learn i decided that i should employ the knowledge and help of more experienced people.
I adore the scent of myrrh, and resins in general, and i´ve been experimenting with those substances a lot- But i haven´t been able to produce anything which is remotely wearable.
Ofc, this is to be expected, since i´m just a beginner, but maybe you can share a few pointers with me.
Ideally i would have something which clearly smells of myrrh and resin, with a woody, slightly smoky and warm base around which the resins “play”. It also shouldn´t stay to close to the skin and project a little.
The problem i´m facing right now is mostly, that the blends don´t smell like anything at all, or just barely. When working with other blends, and less resinous materials, at least i get some kind of feeback- “Oh, it doesn´t smell like anything good, but at least it smells of something.” It´s quite exasperating that not much at all is perceiveable- No Iso-e, not even the frankincense, which is usually a very strong scent.
The “Incense 1″, the one without patchouli/musk/Vanilla, barely smells of anything.
The “Incense 2 Patchouli” starts of with a nice patchouli note, but which soon fades until barely anything, except maybe some weak resin is perceiveable.
The “Incense 3 Vanilla” smells nice- Of Vanilla. That´s it. I really like vanilla, but that´s not the purpose of this scent and i´ve already got a very nice vanilla going.
The “Incense 4 Musk” projects the best, although still not great, but what is perceiveable smells mostly clean and not at all incensy.
I realize that the issue most likely is that i´m using a lot of heavy notes, which don´t project well and lot´s of resins which can dampen the blend. I´m at a loss, though, since those are the notes i actually want to smell and i wanted to get the base, the ground, done before i decide to let´s say, add some jasmin.
And there should be a way to get a distinctive myrrh/Incense scent. I´m just to inexperienced to do so without help.
Your input is much appreciated.
