Exactly of much of each of those smells distill out of it from the special fraction, I couldn’t tell you.
My impression of the wood was it sort of had the vague overall feeling somewhat like virginiana cedar wood, kind of sharp, but maybe a little more mild, maybe even just a little kind of buttery (underneath the sharp cedar texture). Overall lighter in smell yet also deeper at the same time. (The smell of the wood mostly evokes a “greyish yellow color”, with the yellow color probably coming from the ginger note, but the nootkatone adds a small amount of green woodiness, also a little reminiscent of mouth-puckering rhubarb, grapefruit and vetiver, it’s a complex textured feel. The nootkatone note feels like only 30% of the smell though. The wood also has maybe a little bit of sharp antiseptic or lemon Pine-Sol character. It feels less dry and warm than virginiana cedar) Like virginiana cedar, it’s the type of wood you could want to keep smelling, a kind of intriguing smell. I could imagine it combining well with aquatics.
The crushed up leaves do not smell anywhere as nice or interesting as the freshly cut wood.
I hope it’s smoky character only comes out at very high concentrations.
Sorry to disappoint you but there is no covering up its smoky character.
You better like a cedar, virgiana cedar note, and also a moderate ginger and smokey note if you want to use this.
Someone in the PSH reviews said it has a noticeable grapefruit nuance.
How can I phrase this… If you keep grapefruit in mind while smelling it, and smell it very carefully, you can pick up on a moderately small grapefruit type note. But it’s probably not something that would immediately come to mind for an ordinary person smelling this.
That small grapefruit note in there is invigorating and beautiful though. But the grapefruit is only a small part of the wood’s smell.
That note is not a fruity red or orange grapefruit, but a green woody one (maybe more like the skin of an underripe pomelo).
If you’ve ever perceived a slight grapefruit note in pencil shavings, it’s that same sort of smell but more.
If you’re only trying to get the grapefruit note from this wood, I do not think that will be very realistic.
